2007 WINNERS PROFILE:
Ford Farm
The South West winner of the 2007 International Trade Awards, sponsored by RbS, is Ford Farm of Dorchester.
Whatever the criteria, Ford Farm can be considered a big cheese. The company – which makes many varieties of traditional cheese by hand from its own milk and that of a few selected neighbours – has also developed new varieties that include Coastal, a cheddar that crunches as the calcium from the milk crystallises, and Cave Aged Cheddar, matured in Wookey Hole near Cheddar in Somerset.
In three years, Ford Farm has raised exports from three per cent to 25 per cent – just one of the reasons why the judges considered the company such a worthy winner.
Ford Farm developed its export business to ‘spread risk and increase security’. Chief executive Mike Pullin said: ‘The home market is very concentrated and exports were pursued as a means of extending the customer base and diversifying risk. Naturally, exports have their own risks, such as fluctuating exchange rates, long supply chains and unexpected factors such as outbreaks of foot and mouth but these are different risks than those experienced in the home market.
Bill Moore, South West regional sales director for RBS, congratulated Ford Farm on their award and emphasised how important exporters were to the UK economy. RBS prides itself on giving exporters every possible assistance in this regard. 'We've seen a definite increase in demand from businesses across the South West who have turned to international trade to grow and build on their existing success in the UK. Ford Farm are a great example of this and have been awarded for their rapid increase in exports. It's great to see their overseas achievements, particularly in the US.'
